PR & media training

PR, stands for Public Relations. Very often, PR is about strengthening the relationship between a company and the media. It's about getting newspapers, TV, radio etc. to pay attention to what we do. When they highlight us in editorial space (not advertising), it is a very powerful way of reaching out to potential customers and partners, and it is something that is done both from KAYAKOMAT HQ and from your operators;

Actively promote your station with PR

You can work actively to get this attention. We at KAYAKOMAT do a lot of work to create brand awareness through, for example, sending out press releases and direct contact with local media. Some of the marketing budget goes to this work and we have seen very good results in previous years.  As a result, there is a high chance that you will be contacted by a journalist during the event and it is important that you are well prepared. In the clip, Karin Pontén, from Our PR Agency, shares media training.  Practise the things Karin goes through so that you feel comfortable with the ideas and methods.

As a local operator, you can also be active in PR. Regularly contact the local media in your area and tell them about when you are opening, when you have events, if you have any fun collaborations and so on. It’s good to find your own angle; for example, they might want to write about summer tips in the region, about new local entrepreneurs or about a fun event where you got various local celebrities to compete in a kayak race.

Our press room has pictures and information that you can share with the journalists you talk to so that they have material for the article they will write.

Mini-Course: how to effectively manage media & get your message out to the public

Our message:

  • Book online, unlock, paddle.  It’s convenient, flexible and sustainable.
  • Interest in paddle sports has grown enormously in recent years
  • Point 65, the company behind KAYAKOMAT, is Sweden’s leading kayak manufacturer
  • KAYAKOMAT started in Sweden in 2021 on a small scale and became very popular in 2022.
  • In 2023, we will go from 80 to almost 200 KAYAKOMATs in Sweden and start up properly in Germany, Denmark, France, Spain, Austria, Switzerland and Canada

What is unique about KAYAKOMAT?

It has been shown that many people prefer to share this type of equipment rather than own it, so KAYAKOMAT is very much of the moment. Especially in big cities, it’s hard to find somewhere to store your kayak.

You want freedom and flexibility, and to focus on the experience itself rather than the responsibility of ownership.

In addition, research shows that the average kayak owner uses their equipment on average 8grr/year and SUP owners even less. It is therefore more sustainable to share this;

Some positive facts to share

KAYAKOMAT is for visitors and residents alike. It will be a new way to discover your home town or the place you are visiting.

Kayaking /SUP is a great way to socialise, something fun to do with your family, visiting friends or maybe your date.

It’s usually at its quietest and most beautiful in the early morning or during our long, brightsummer nights. That’s when most rentals are closed, but in KAYAKOMAT you can rent at any time.

Please mention the sustainability aspect. We care about the cycle as our kayaks are sold to private individuals after 100 rentals, instead of them buying new. This way, the equipment gets a second, long life instead of ending up in the recycling centre.

Safety concerns

Thanks to the booking function, unlike manned rentals, we can 100% ensure that you have seen the safety instructions.

In the booking flow there are instructions in the form of animations on how to paddle safely, for example that you should not go out in bad weather and what to do if you fall over. Each person who hires needs to approve that they have seen and understood these;

The kayaks are stable and suitable for beginners as well as more experienced paddlers. Life jackets are provided in each kayak and must be worn. You should not paddle alone, adapt to the weather and to your level of knowledge. For example, paddle close to shore if you are not used to it;

If an accident occurs at your station and you are contacted by the media, it is important to refer to Point65, Richard Öhman. Richard’s mobile number is 070 756 33 26. Keep the call as short as possible; don’t take any hooks to say anything anyway, but refer firmly:

“You’ll have to take that with you Richard” “Sorry, you’ll have to ask Richard”

About crisis management

If an accident happens at your station and you are contacted by the media, it is important to refer to KAYAKOMAT’s owner, Richard Öhman.

Questions about theft/damage

Point 65, the company behind KAYAKOMAT, has been renting out kayaks manually for 15 years and has never had any problems with theft or vandalism. Those who rent do so because they want to go out paddling, and the risk of them not returning the equipment is as small as with a manual hire. We also have the possibility to charge a customer who does not follow the rules;

Kayaks are bulky items to steal and resell.
